Chapter Ten – Chrysi

She took a step forward, chest thrust out, showing no fear. Harlan had taught her well; body language was an invisible means of contact, and they read her, seeing she was not afraid, that she would not back down. As if to back her up, Nevis roared, his teeth bared, before ending with a snarl and a snapping of teeth. Verging on the overly dramatic, but it did the trick.

“Get the damn phone, Bart.” Ross jerked his head toward the cave.

“And no funny business,” Chrysi called after him. “My bear does not do funny.”

Chrysi stepped back from Ross, and stroked her bear’s head. Ross’s eyes nearly fell out of their sockets. “Where the hell did you get a pet bear from?” he asked acidly.

“He saved me from the snow,” she said. It wasn’t a lie. “And we bonded over dinner, and snuggled for the night while the snow fell. I found him loyal and sincere. Unlike you.”

“That’s a pile of horse crap,” Ross insisted.

“I don’t much care what you think.” She dug in her pocket and took out the ring she had picked up from the table before they left the cabin. “Here. You might need to pawn this to pay for a lawyer. Or is it fake, like everything else?”

Ross didn’t hesitate; he held out his hand and took back the ring. “You still have to get down off the mountain.” It was a veiled threat.

“Oh, I’ll get down. But you two are going to stay right here,” she told them, as Bart appeared with the satellite phone. Chrysi held out her hand for it. “Thanks. Now you two can go back inside, and wait for the sheriff to get here.”

“Why would we do that?” Bart replied, squaring his shoulders.

“Because one thing I have taught my pet bear, is to stay.” She pointed to a stand of trees behind them. “He is going to sit in those trees, and if you as much as poke your head out of this cave, he is going to bite you. How deep that bite is, depends on how long he’s been waiting. A bear can get mighty hungry, you know.”

“You’re bluffing,” Ross said, leaning forward, his face pulled into a sneer.

Nevis didn’t wait for her to command him. Leaping forward, his teeth snapped shut within two inches of Ross’s face, bear drool spraying out to cover his skin. Ross screamed like a girl and jumped backwards, his foot slipping on the packed snow underfoot, and he fell to the ground on his ass.

“I suggest you crawl back into your cave and stay there. Start praying the sheriff finds you before my bear gets hungry. He needs to store up some body fat before the winter, and he doesn’t much care what kind of meat he eats.” Chrysi watched the two men scuttle back into the cave. “Losers.”

Turning away from the cave, she looked down at the satellite phone in her hand. There wasn’t much battery left, but she hoped it would be enough to call her father, or the local sheriff.
